about

"Who HURT you? she said (the emphasis hers). I smiled and chuckled. I'm sure I replied with something witty or embarrassing (perhaps both). This interaction and the conversation that ensued transpired directly after I had finished playing a particular tune and got off stage at a gig somewhere in the Garden State. I don't recall the venue but what I do remember well was the tone of her voice. Incredulous and funny, slightly mocking and yet concerned (a New Jersey specialty), mixed with a "you've seen some serious shit, dude..." timbre that was equal parts deep and delightful, like Kathleen Turner from "Romancing The Stone" two beers deep and ready to share a hot dog and a hug with you. I never caught her name. I remember her dirty blonde hair, the black tank top she wore and her East Coast savoir faire. People can make an impression that lasts a lifetime in only a few moments. Ever since that evening every time that song crosses my mind I think of her, Ms. Kathleen Turner Concert Attendee. She took a shit memory and spun it into silver. For that I am forever thankful. If I ever run into her again I think I owe her a hug, a beer and one of Nathan's finest.

The set-ender that the band and I played that evening is unimportant. What does matter is that the material on this ep springs forth from the same well as that song.

Don't worry. The next thing I'm working on is full of love songs. For real.
